LAKERS VS CELTICS PHOTOS

LAKERS CELTICS RIVALRY NEARS END

-Celtics rivalry nears end

BOSTON – Pau Gasol reached that long left arm into the air, toward the Garden rafters, the 17 championship banners, and smacked the Boston Celtics’ chance for victory far, far from the rim. As the clock bled to 0:00 to end overtime, Ray Allen flicked his wrist, the ball fluttered on a clear, clean trajectory, and somehow Gasol spared these Los Angeles Lakers a most hellacious, heartbreaking loss.
“I was in the perfect situation,” Allen said later, “and he came out of nowhere.”

Four years ago, Gasol had come out of nowhere – out of Memphis – to set these Lakers on course to re-engage the Boston Celtics. Allen and Kevin Garnett had come together with Paul Pierce, Gasol with Kobe Bryant, and the greatest rivalry in the history of the NBA had been born again.
Four years later, they’ve played two excruciating, unforgettable series in the NBA Finals. The Celtics won the 2008 championship; the Lakers won it in 2010. They were dancing the dance one more time Thursday night, and deep down they all know this generation’s rivalry is coming to a close.
The Lakers escaped 88-87 and Bryant, Gasol and Andrew Bynum had the big blocks, big baskets and big boards to beat Boston. All over again, Lakers-Celtics has been compelling theater, a link to the league’s yesteryear and it won’t be long until these games have little ramification on the NBA again. When Bryant comes back to Boston next season, Garnett and Allen likely won’t be here. When Bryant comes back to Boston, Gasol probably won’t be with him.
Change is coming because these teams are no longer constructed, constituted, for the championship chase.
“It’s always a brawl whenever we fight,” Bryant said. “It’s ugly. It’s physical. I’ve enjoyed competing against them. … We’re old school. Ray, Paul, Kevin. So is Rajon [Rondo]. How they prepare for the game, how much it means to them, the emotion they put into the game – you don’t really that see that much from the young guys out there.”

It’s no accident that Bryant loves to walk the streets of Boston on off days here and commune with the Commonwealth. For all the nastiness inside the arena, he’s always amazed at the way they welcome a Lakers star here. There’s a connection, and they all want to hold onto it as long as they can.
“The fans hate your guts when you’re playing here, but very appreciative of the talent,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “When you see them out on the streets, it’s always a warm reception. ‘Man, I hate you, but … I love watching you. How do you think the Celtics are going to do?’ It’s a running conversation.”
It’s been a running conversation for a while, but it won’t be long until this rivalry is merely memories. The Celtics will go to a full rebuild and the Lakers a retool. The Lakers lost out on Chris Paul, but this was one more night when it was clear that a diminished Derek Fisher – 0-for-7 and two assists in 24 minutes – makes the point guard position such a liability for them. Fisher can still play a part, but these Lakers need a younger, defter playmaker, and Gasol is the lure to get one.
Gasol discovered that he missed out on getting selected to the All-Star game, and it was fitting. As it turns out, his younger brother, Marc, took his spot on the West roster. Four years ago, Marc’s rights were traded to the Grizzlies for Pau, and people called it the worst, most one-sided trade in history. Now, Marc’s an All-Star and, yes, Pau was privately seething over the coaches leaving him out. Still, the Lakers didn’t deserve three All-Stars – and they knew it.
Nevertheless, Kobe was chatting Rondo up for most of the fourth quarter. Rondo’s a player who so intrigues Bryant. Who wouldn’t want him? But he isn’t available to the Lakers. Everyone knows the Lakers need a point guard, and the price of a top playmaker remains the same: Gasol. The Houston Rockets still have a longing for Gasol, but the Lakers would want a player the Rockets are most reluctant to part with: point guard Kyle Lowry. The Lakers could probably pry a combination of Kevin Martin and Luis Scola for Gasol, league sources said, but it’s doubtful they’ll move Gasol without solving their point guard problem. Lowry has developed into one of the league’s finest point guards, but Rockets general manager Daryl Morey isn’t trading him.

So the Lakers will keep probing the market, waiting. Bryant has patience because he believes in GM Mitch Kupchak. Nevertheless, there’s fear the Buss boys are dictating basketball policy now, and that’s been apparent in the glumness front-office peers and agents sense from Kupchak when they speak to him.
Several Lakers and Celtics players, including stars Ray Allen, Pau Gasol and Kevin Garnett, could be wearing different uniforms – or be retired – when the Lakers visit Boston next season.
(US Presswire)
For now, the Lakers have been looking over some recent workout tapes of free agent Gilbert Arenas and will likely watch him work out in person in the next few days. Still, Bryant mostly speaks about his belief in the Lakers’ frontline and the need to clean up the sloppiness and missed execution in fourth quarters.
This was a hell of a victory, especially against these Celtics who’ve played so, so well in recent weeks. It’s strange what a comfortable place that Boston has become for Bryant, who once stopped by the New England Patriots’ practice facility to meet head coach Bill Belichick. “I was rooting for the Patriots [in the Super Bowl],” he said.
When Kobe noticed Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski sitting courtside Thursday, he walked over and told him he should play. Gronkowski reacted with downright giddiness. If dancing away a Super Bowl loss hadn’t gotten him in trouble with Patriots fans, how about giggling it up with the Lakers’ Bryant courtside of a Celtics game?
Bryant laughed and said, “I’m so old most of these guys were watching me when they were in middle school.”
Boston’s his kind of town – passionate, proud. He knows it takes something to beat the Celtics. The worst night of his pro life had to be after that Game 6 loss in the 2008 Finals, when the Celtics humiliated the Lakers. It felt like Bryant would never come out of that dark training room that night. Yet he did, and the Lakers won back-to-back titles in ’09 and ’10.
[ Also: Photos of Michael Jordan’s letter of intent, recruiting letter ]
Bryant admires the Celtics, and he told Doc Rivers that the Celtics coach’s son Austin had “huge cojones” after beating North Carolina on Wednesday night. When asked whether the Celtics would ever give away a frontline player in a salary dump to, say, the Miami Heat, Bryant pursed his lips and refused to say a word. He shook his head as though to say: You won’t get me to answer that question.
Lamar Odom is gone and so is his ball-handling, his offense, his unique talent. Gone for nothing, and you still wonder how the Lakers ever get past that this year. Still, they made it past the Celtics on Thursday night, with Gasol’s long arm slapping one final Celtics’ shot out of the air and out of harm’s way.
Bryant had to stay on the floor a little longer for the postgame interview, and when he finally ran through the tunnel on the way to the Lakers’ locker room, you could see all those Celtics fans leaning down, screaming, taunting, cursing him. Oh, how he loved it. And how he’ll miss it. Kobe Bryant will be back in Boston, but that old-school gang, those most familiar reflections with the Celtics, won’t be waiting for him.
“We’ve played against each other so many times, you know what’s coming,” Bryant said. “It’s been a dream come true. I’ve grown up watching it, and here I am, part of it.”
For one more night, when it still mattered anyway, when the Celtics-Lakers still commanded the sport’s stage. Next month, next year, it’s all coming fast now. Everyone wanted to hold onto this stage, this night – this long-running fight – a little longer on Thursday. Celtics-Lakers in overtime again, the clock running down. On his way out of Boston a winner one more time, Kobe Bryant made sure to breathe it all in.

LarryBird chooses Kobe over LeBron

Larry Bird said he’d pick Kobe over LeBron to be his teammate

PUBLISHED 20 hours and 41 minutes ago

LAST UPDATED 19 hours and 52 minutes ago

Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Larry Bird said if he were to choose any current player with whom to play, it would be Kobe Bryant over LeBron James--even though he thinks James "by far is the best player" in the NBA.
But in classic Bird fashion, he suggests Kobe would have to shoot less if the two were to be teammates, the implication being that Bird needs his shots.
"Probably Kobe, because of the fact that ... well, of course he wouldn't have been shooting as much as he does now ... but his desire to win, his dedication, to always get better, and he's just, he's just tough," Bird said on Bill Simmons’ podcast. "He's just a tough cat.”
Bird, now the Pacers president of basketball operations, added, "If you want to have fun, like I did with Bill Walton, play with LeBron. It would have probably been more fun to play with LeBron, but if you want to win and win and win, it's Kobe. Not that LeBron's not a winner, just that (Kobe's) mindset is to go into every practice, every game, to get better."

Is This Kobe Just Being Kobe

Report: Kobe Bryant Hurts Lakers’ Chance At Acquiring Dwight Howard

Orlando Magic forward Dwight Howard has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not sign an extension with the team if they traded for him because of what Kobe Bryant told him, according to Jarrod Rudolph of RealGM.
Howard was turned off to the Lakers based on what Bryant told him: that Howard would be “his Tyson Chandler” and that the Lakers would still be his team, according to Rudolph. Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld.com backed up the report, tweeting that “Kobe messed it up.”
According to Rudolph, Howard said that there was “no way” he would leave Orlando and be a third option. Howard would be a third option on a star-heavy team but did not like how Bryant explained the situation, according to Rudolph.
Earlier this week, Orlando Magic GM Otis Smith said that there would be no major trade in the near future. Howard has been the subject of trade rumors since Howard said he planned to become a free-agent after this season.

THE LOWDOWN SUPER BOWL EDITION 2012

When the Gmen defeated the Pats the first thing I tweeted was "BRADY TRYING TO CATCH MONTANNA IS LIKE KOBE TRYING TO CATCH JORDAN. THE UNIVERSE AND SPORTS GODS DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN." With all things being equal Brady and Kobe should have zoomed past their counter parts years ago. Let's look at the parallels surrounding their circumstances. Brady and Kobe both won their first three championships that they played in, but the credit for their success was given to others. Bellicheck, Vinateri and the Pat's defense were given all the credit for their Super Bowl wins, despite the fact that Brady was the one leading the charge. Shaq and Phil received all the credit for the Lakers titles like Kobe was some scrub who came along for the ride. Go back and watch the film and you will see Brady looking flawless while putting his team into position to win each Super Bowl. This is not figure skating or the BCS, so it doesn't matter that each game was one by field goals. A win is a win.Fast forward years later. Kobe had to break away from Shaq and lead a brand new Lakers team to victory, but not before he loss two NBA Finals in a row also.Kobe was not given the credit for being the designated 4th qtr closer on those Lakers teams because Shaq was the first option and a dominating force.Kobe haters would hold this against him even though he averaged 25 5 and 5 during the championship run. Brady himself quarterbacking a brand new Pat's regime has also loss two Super Bowls in a row. With the emphasis no longer on Vinateri or the Pat's defense Brady much like Kobe is the undisputed face of his franchise. I know you are all sitting at home saying they had their chances and they are just not as good as Jordan and Montanna. Wrong Brady and Kobe also have something else in common, because of the arrogance and short sightedness of their front offices and head coaches they have not been given the supporting casts that their talents deserve.Sure Kobe has won two more championships, but he did so while suffering through years of never having a top notch point guard or wing man. Imagine Kobe playing with Rondo,Paul, Williams,Parker, Nash or even Andre Miller or Billups as his PG. He played with Smush Parker, Chucky Atkins, Jordan Farmer and Fisher(NO DISRESPECT BUT FISHER CAN ONLY HIT THREES AND TAKE CHARGES). To put it in perspective that means no transition game, no fast break, no easy buckets, no highlight reel dunks and no alley oops. Kobe had to create offense on his own while playing with guys who he had to personally set up.Last time I checked Kobe played SHOOTING GUARD not point guard. Brady was forced to play with two tight ends, a midget wide receiver, Chad Johnson who lost his swagger and game, a law firm at running back  named BennJarvis GreenEllis and Woodhead, and any other midget 5th round pick that Bellicheck could get his hands on and he led them to the Super Bowl. The difference between the Giants and the Pats was one thing talent. The Pats led by Brady believed that they could win, but the Gmen led by Eli and that Nascar Package pass rush knew they were going to win.If Brady played with Andre Johnson, Megatron or hell if he had the Dallas Cowboys offensive weapons he would have more than 3 rings by now. Brady needs to speak up now and change his fortunes before the one thing even he can't defeat  Father Time sneaks up on him and takes him out. Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of Brady's nor do I feel sorry for millionaire, pretty boys with models for wives. I'm just saying that when I look at him and Kobe I see two guys that have given their all for their franchises all while playing at a high level despite who they were given to play  with. I don't  know what their franchises see in them, but they both had the potential to be the best ever, and I'm afraid that their talent along with their drive to be the best will be wasted long before they fulfill their promise.Enjoy Brady and Kobe now because when they are gone I have a feeling that you will not like what you will be forced to see.Lakers and Pats you still have time to do the right thing and win championships. Brady and Kobe you can either sit by and watch your legacy play out or you can stand up and say something and hopefully take your place at the top of MT. RUSHMORE. MontanNa and Jordan would have never played with mediocre talent in their prime then again their organizations would not have allowed it to happen. Once again I say THE SPORTS GOD'S FOR SOME REASON DON'T WANT KOBE AND BRADY TO PASS JORDAN AND MONTANNA AND NOW ALL OF YOU HATERS CAN REST AT NIGHT KNOWING THAT YOUR IDOLS ARE SAFE. I'm out like the Hoody and the rest of the Pats.

NBA FASTBREAK #1

During the Laker's championship run with Shaq, Kobe, and Phil there was often squabbles over shot selection, touches, running the triangle and who's team it really was. Shaq often let his feelings be known verbally through the media and Kobe often showed how he felt by his aggressive or passive play on the court. Phil often sided with Shaq, but he knew that Kobe had a legitimate gripe when they often butted heads. Even though they won 3 rings together they could have accomplished so much more if they each would have put aside their egos. Shaq believed the offense should go through the big man and Kobe felt that he was a better offensive weapon because he was the one putting in the work in the off season. During the third leg of the Laker's three peat Shaq uttered a phrase that I have not forgotten to this day. "You have to feed the dog if you want him to guard the yard. That's code for if you want rebounding and defense then feed me that rock and I will work harder. Right or wrong that statement has stuck with me to this day. Phil and the critics should have blasted Shaq, but instead they backed him by saying Kobe shot to much and that Shaq definitely should be the first option. This logic has baffled me, because guys like Ben Wallace, Dikemebe Mutumbo, Alonzo Mourning, and Dwight Howard don't use touches as a means to determine the amount of effort they are going to put out on the defensive end.I can never remember Scottie and Horace saying fuck this MJ is doing all the scoring let him shut the paint down by himself. The reason why I bring this up is because, Gasol and Bynum have both questioned their touches and have used this as an excuse to defend their lackluster play. I know you are saying that plenty of teams would love to have two seven footers like Bynum and Gasol, but even when Dwight Howard doesn't deliver on offense his rebounding and defense is always there. Last night the Lakers won against the Clippers and Gasol and Bynum not only received their touches, but they came up big on  the defensive and on the glass. It has all of us asking where has this effort been all year. It is sad, but Kobe Bean Bryant knows what he has to do. If he wants the dogs to guard the yard he damn sure better feed them the rock.

  • ROMEO'S THOUGHTS:
  • If the Ron Artest who showed up last night against the Clippers shows up the rest of the year the Lakers despite their poor PG play could win it all. When Artest plays with that don't fuck with me attitude he energizes the team and the fans. Opposing players then think twice about fucking with Gasol and the Lakers seem to match his energy by diving for loose balls and playing with physical toughness.
  • I don't care how tough you say Chris Paul is he wouldn't have gone back at Kenyon Martin or Ben Wallace if they did what Pau Gasol did to him.
  • LaMarcus Aldridge is the best player you have never heard of. Imagine him, Brandon Roy and Greg Oden together.
  • Who in their right mind wants to become involved in that mess called the Wizards?
  • Smart move by the Magic to not offer Ryan Anderson an extension when clearly he benefits from playing with Howard and he might not be there next year.
  • Bosh Spice and Queen James are a better fit together than Dwade and Queen James.
  • The Lakeshow should go after Mr. Intensity himself Kevin Garnett next year when he becomes a free agent. Put him with Artest and Kobe and you have three trash talking intimidating motherfuckers. Not to mention you know he wants another ring.
  • It's bad enough A PIMP NAMED STERN gave the Clippers CP, but he gave them Chauncey Billups also. Who was involved in this secret bidding shit? The Lakeshow doesn't have a PG and the Clippers have three. CP, Mo Williams, and Billups
  • The Knicks need Steve Nash and they need him now. DantoniCarmello Anthony.
  • The Celtics are done and it all started with the trade of Kendrick Perkins. Personally I think he is overrated but he is one of those glue guys that teams need to win championships. The C's have not been the same since the trade and only Rondo has the ability night in and night out to play at a high level.
  • All this Clippers love makes me sick and all you dick riding bandwagon jumpers will rue the day that you bet against the Mamba.
  • For my money coach Pop is the best coach in the business and how he wins with Duncan,Manu,Parker and a bunch of no names amazes me.
  • There is a rumor out there that Queen James does not like the disciplined style of team president Pat Riley and that when his contract is up he is considering a return to Cleveland. You mean James has a problem abiding by team rules and respecting authority. Go figure.
  • Signs that I'm done with the NBA. Eric Gordon turned down a 4yr 60 million dollar contract that Kevin Love just signed. Westbrook just signed a 5yr 78 million dollar deal. Enough of this lunacy. When guys make money like Queen James, but can't carry his jock that's a problem. Kobe and LeBron are the two guys that I know that sell out buildings but guys like Gordon and Love think people come to see their ass. Guys demand money for putting up numbers and organizations cater to them while complaining to the fans and raising ticket prices. What the fuck was the purpose of the lockout.
  • I'm out like the Terps on GARY WILLIAMS night. Way to honor the coach that won you a national championship by losing to Duke at home.
